Making 2016 Your Best Year Yet

It was fantastic to see the huge turnout for my lecture this past Thursday, and I want to thank everyone who took time out of their busy lives to come out to a health lecture on a weeknight.  It’s very rewarding  to see people interested in wanting to assume responsibility for their own health, and in learning about some of the key aspects that contribute to being able to enjoy optimal health on all levels, physical, mental and emotional.

Some of the areas I touched upon in the lecture that are critical for health:

  • Controlling hidden infections and inflammatory processes in the body
  • The role of nutritional supplementation
  • Controlling mitochondrial damage that occurs through daily life and the aging process
  • The absolutely crucial role of adequate sleep on a regular basis
  • Finding ways to control the negative stresses encountered in life
  • The importance of daily exercise, varied in type (cardio/flexibility/resistance) but NOT overdone
  • Developing a strong and supportive social “network” in your life
  • Balance in HPA axis:  hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis
  • Replacing and balancing hormones in the body as we age, for both women and men
  • Becoming aware of what an extremely toxic world we live in, and developing personal strategies for mitigating as many toxins as possible
  • Learning about what “xenobiotics” are:  chemicals or substances that once inside the body act as “endocrine disruptors”, mimicking the effects of hormones, disrupting normal functioning of our highly sophisticated and intricately balanced endocrine system, and causing serious disease
  • The important role of detoxification, and helping our bodies rid themselves of the dangerous chemicals and substances that we are constantly exposed to

Joining me on Thursday evening was noted LA-based integrative nutritionist and wellness coach Marlyn Diaz, CN, who outlined in more detail how we can structure a way of eating for ourselves that will promote optimal wellness.  Some of the ideas she discussed were:

  • Eat like a rainbow, choose a wide variety of foods of all different colors to maximize intake of crucial nutrients and vitamins
  • Increase your intake of local, seasonal, fresh and organic foods, including lean proteins each day (wild-caught fish and seafood, grass-fed beef, hormone-free pasture-raised poultry, and Omega-3 enriched eggs)
  • Avoid artificial ingredients, chemicals, and preservatives
  • Decrease intake of refined sugars, gluten-containing foods, white flour products and processed foods
  • Eat “real” food, focus on foods with simple, clean and whole ingredients
  • Enjoy healthy fats such as olive oil, and those found in avocados, olives, raw seeds and nuts
  • Drink plenty of purified water each day
  • Don’t follow fads, find out what works for you!  Don’t deprive yourself, enjoy delicious and healthy food.  Eating should be pleasurable.
  • Jump in right now!  No need to “wait until Monday” or next week, or next month.  This is your life right now, grab hold of it and make it great!

I’m very happy that Marlyn has joined my practice and will be seeing patients on Fridays.  If you would like to schedule a consult with her, please call my office at (310) 315-5483.

I’d also like to send out a thank-you to Adrienne Chandhok, who does all the hard work of getting my lectures organized, publicized and off the ground,  and definitely helps to make each event so successful.  She was assisted on Thursday evening by Jose, my administrative assistant in the office and all-around great guy, who keeps a lot of things running smoothly for me behind the scenes .  If you are not yet on the email list for my future lectures and would like to be, please email Adrienne at a.chandhok@davidallenmd.com.

Here’s hoping 2016 will be your best year yet!
